The third qualifier for the first SolForge World Championship took place on October 11, 2014. The field of 79 players battled through a seven round Swiss before a cut to the Top 16.

The ForgeWatch crew organized and provided live coverage:

The UnLegendary format was used for this tournament. Having been announced less than two weeks prior to the event, the tournament favored players already familiar with the format or able to invest time to identify a strong metagame selection. The deck to beat was NU Broodqueen Tracker which dominated the tournament and appeared in fifteen of the Top 16 decklists. The one exception was a Tempys burn deck with a Nekrium splash for Grimgaunt Predator piloted by tournament leaderboard staple, Technonaut.

It was a long day of mirrors and only one Broodqueen wrangler could emerge victorious. Congratulations, Otsis!

I’m pretty disgusted with the lack of variety. Either Broodqueen is still too powerful, or the player base lacks imagination.

    • Turkis says:

The deck is suffocating in the format. Mono T had some viability, but generally speaking mono T decks had to hope that the UN decks didn’t draw trackers.

I’ve seen people try to blame the player base in a few spots for this, but it’s a mistake to do so. There were other decks in the tournament, they simply weren’t on par with the tracker/broodqueen decks.

    • Zwaxor says:

It’s a competitive game. It’s unreasonable to put the blame on the players for wanting to win. Also, 11 days of testing doesn’t leave too much time to test and tune new brews.
