Set 7.2 Spoiler – Primeval Ancient

September 20, 2016 by KonanTheBarbarian

Hi everyone – I have a new spoiler for you and I’m excited to reveal another Dinosaur! (Mosstodon, my Set 6 preview, had a huge impact on the metagame at its time.)

Set 7.2 Ancient Grudge is a mini-set with eight cards that target specific factions / archetypes and our new Dinosaur fits this theme perfectly.

First of all I have to say I really like the art – it’s a mix of hideous and hilarious: a four-armed Tyrannosaurus rex with an oddly shaped head that gets more fierce and armored as it levels up! 😀

This card is good against decks that don’t run many creatures and decks that kill you so fast that every last drop of health matters. TL;DR: it’s a good card against burn decks.

With that in mind I would probably start with a more standard mono-U build:

mosstodon1-300b3 Bron, Wild Tamer
3 Mosstodon
3 Patron of Deepwood
3 Primeval Ancient
3 Roaming Warclaw
3 Shardplate Toxoid
3 Uterradon Rex

3 Enduring Vitality
3 Ferocious Roar
3 Thunderstomp

I added Shardplate Toxoid to this list because the deck doesn’t run many ping effects to clear nearly dead creatures, and when played with Vitality it can easily improve your non-burn match-ups quite a bit. Thunderstomp is simply a great card to clear multiple lanes and can also enable Primeval’s Forge ability.

Primeval Ancient works well with Uterradon Rex and Enduring Vitality buffs. If your opponent doesn’t have a creature on board it greatly improves your odds of playing a multi-lane dinosaur with a Bron in hand. Even if Primeval doesn’t seem threatening initially, its lifegain can easily add up and tip the game in your favor.

You could also build the deck completely differently and try to abuse the lifegain effect much more. When I think about lifegain I have to consider the staples of Wegu and Lightbringer Council. These two will be the core of the deck and work great with Primeval Ancient.

In the last metagame I had tons of fun with the UT WeguTor archetype and will try to adapt that archetype for Ancient Grudge:

umbrukicecrusher3-300b3 Ator, Thunder Titan
3 Bron, Wild Tamer
3 Lightbringer Council
3 Oros, Deepwood’s Chosen
3 Primeval Ancient
3 Wegu, the Ancient
2 Mosstodon
2 Roaming Warclaw
2 Umbruk Icecrusher

3 Lysian Shard
2 Call the Lightning
1 Staff of Vaerus

Lots of aggressive creatures combined with lifegain and Wegu is tough to handle and should secure you easy victories against burn. That being said this deck only targets one specific archetype (fitting the Ancient Grudge m.o.) so I don’t think it will be Tier 1. Nevertheless I’m excited to brew with it. 🙂

The last option I could think of would be to play Primeval Ancient as a tech card in AU GrowWide decks with Weirwood Patriarch. I’ll leave it up to you to experiment in that direction and hope you enjoy the rest of Set 7.2.
